What a tight psoas & iliacus needs to relax

The muscles most stretches don't reach the way you think

The iliacus sits on the inside of the pelvic bone. Reaching it means coming in at an angle and rotating, which a foam roller, a static tool, or a massage gun can’t do by shape. The Hip Hook’s tip reproduces what a physical therapist’s thumb does, and you control the pressure the whole way. A stretch lengthens both muscles. Tension doesn't stretch out. Flexibility isn't the same as release.

A muscle can be perfectly flexible and still hold tension at rest. That resting tension is what makes the hip feel tight even when you've stretched. Only sustained pressure, held long enough for the nervous system to hear it, teaches the muscle to let go.

Why your hip flexor stretch doesn't fully release it

The couch stretch, the lunge, the runner's stretch. They all work the same muscles the same way. They put the psoas and iliacus into a lengthened position and hold. That is real, useful work. It builds flexibility.

What a stretch doesn't do is teach the muscle to release. A muscle can be perfectly flexible and still hold tension at rest, which is why the tightness feels good in the stretch and then comes back an hour later.

Stretching also asks something of the muscle you already have. Prolonged pressure sends a different signal. Hold it in one place long enough, and the muscle actually lets go. That is the mechanism most stretch routines are missing.

Keep stretching. It has its place. But if your hip flexors have felt tight for months, the missing piece is probably the release, not another rep.

Head-to-head: stretching vs release

In a randomized controlled trial with 25 participants who had chronic lower back pain, one group did hip flexor stretches. The other group used the Hip Hook. Both groups practiced three times a week for four weeks.

After four weeks, the Hip Hook group reported 19% more pain relief than the group doing stretches alone. And the stretching group's physical activity declined significantly over the four weeks, while the Hip Hook group maintained their baseline.

That's the honest comparison. Stretching is worth doing. It just isn't doing what release does, and the study shows the difference.

Christine didn't set out to build a wellness brand. She set out to solve a problem she kept seeing in her clinic.

Over 25 years of physical therapy practice, one pattern repeated itself. Patients arrived after they'd tried everything; PT, chiropractors, massage, stretching, strengthening, injections. They were diligent. They were exhausted. And they still weren't getting better.

What most practitioners were missing was chronic tension in certain key muscles, like the iliacus, that no foam roller or massage gun could reach. Christine could release it with her fingers. It worked. But there was a limit to how many hands she had, how many hours in a day, and how consistently a patient could access that kind of hands-on care.

So she designed the Hip Hook to replace her fingers.
